Where is the information for the girl's camp?
As we are expanding the type of services we are providing, we needed to consider that our
facilities are not currently setup to support a COED environment. That is why camps were always
separate based on gender. As we move forward, if we get continued interest from parents for female camps, we'll consider offering them starting again in
Spring or Summer 2008.

How can I communicate with my child while they are at camp?
Your child will have the opportunity to write letters, and to receive mail every day. If you send anything to your child, please do not send anything that requires a signature, or it may be greatly delayed. The post office is located 35 miles away, so we don't go daily for package pick-up on those type items. You child will also have the opportunity to EARN a phone halfway through their session, and they will notify you by mail of when they will be calling home! If anything happens locally, don't worry, we'll contact you! NEW: We hope to be adding email soon in conjunction with the school program!

Do you have financial aid or scholarships?
No, not at this time. If some philanthropist or group wants to get involved in sponsoring children, please feel free to contact us.

Is it 24 hours a day of hollering at the kids, like on TV?
What is on TV is what they want you to see on TV! If you have seen our staff on TV, you saw the kids before we show up. They have a lot of attitude and say whatever they want. They have no reason not to, as there are not any negative consequences in their mind. When we get in their face, it is not a pleasant experience, it's a negative consequence, or known as negative feedback. If they want the negative feedback to stop, they cooperate. That is a key behavior principle for just about any living creature. Positive feedback encourages a behavior, and negative feedback discourages a behavior. At About Face we have an unlimited supply of both!

Our family doesn't live in North Carolina, can you recommend a camp in our area?
We are not aware of any other program in the entire world that is not part of a
judicial or court system. That is part of the uniqueness of our program. Don't be confused by the BOOTCAMPS you see on many of the talk shows, those are usually part of county or state correctional systems, and they just host the teens for the TV show demonstration.

Are you just a summer camp?
Well, in many respect that is true. While there are summer camps that are purely recreational, there are also specialized ones. Some are sports camps, science camps, math camps, things parents want to help children improve their skills in. We help them improve their life skills. At football camp, if a kid doesn't do something right, coach might have them run laps. Here, if they don't something right, it may be push-ups, it may be making them explain the right action as loud as possible, it may be no dessert! The attendants do as many activities as possible where they have to use teamwork to help them learn to work with others. We challenge them in various task so they can feel the pride of accomplishment.

What is the typical camp food menu like?
Just enough to keep them alive! Just kidding, but that is what we like to tell the kids! One of the things we like to teach the kids is to appreciate what they have at home. Sleeping in a tent for example, makes them appreciate having a bed and air conditioning at home. Starting out we have simple meals, and let the kids know one of the rewards for proper behavior is either burgers from fast food or a trip to a buffet style restaurant! If you imagine your average sack lunch you gave an elementary kid when we were kids, its pretty much what we serve!

I heard your camp referred to as a Christian Camp, can you explain?
The children have various times where they have some 'controlled free time', for letter writing, reading, watching a video rental (always a motivation story) or participating in 'bible studies' with camp personnel. The religious activities are purely optional participation for the campers, but we are proud to say we offer the opportunity!

I saw you on TV, what is that about?
Myself and/or members of my staff have appeared on various talk shows. We have appeared for interview purposes, as well as to 'do what we do best' either right there, or taped later then shown. We are not affiliated or sponsored by any television show or network, nor do we endorse any television show or network. There may be some confusion caused because many of the other bootcamp instructors you see are from county/state run bootcamps that are part of the correctional system. They are not places you can send your children by choice. Myself and members of my staff actually have served on the staff of such facilities and that is what fostered the idea that maybe if we can get to the children a little earlier in life, we can get them back on the right path.

I have a pretty good kid, but he'd like to go to your camp!!
First I want to congratulate you on having a good kid and recognizing that fact. Discipline problems are not a requirement for admission. Some times children grow up where all they see is concrete and maybe you want them to enjoy the
wilderness of North Carolina. Maybe your child doesn't have a positive male role model much of the time, we would be honored to fill that roll. Maybe your kid wants the challenge of the "bootcamp" to see if he has what it takes. Today, there are many children who have lost the socializations skills in exchange for rapid hand-eye coordination for Nintendo or Playstation. If you need someone to make sure your child spends some time outdoors, we can handle that challenge. Or just maybe your child has been to Disney one too many times, and wants to write a better "What I did last summer" essay - we can help! Just tell us about your child and what we can do to have them enjoy and benefit from their time with us! Unfortunately, we do not have a good kid discount!
